The Influence of Mobile Devices to the Hotel Industry

Hassle-free, quick and efficient hotel booking – those are what hotel mobile apps are offering nowadays. So far, mobile devices are currently providing the best solution for faster processing of hotel reservations. Recent surveys revealed that more travelers are willing to use mobile devices to book a hotel room.

In 2013, an average of 1 of 3 individuals admitted to have made reservations online with a mobile device. This year, a research made by Chadwick Martin Bailey tells us that over 60% of 2,000 travelers used a mobile device to plan their vacation, 45% of them used smartphones but only 6% used their smartphones to book a hotel.

Looking at a different angle, although social media is active in helping consumers plan their hotel stay, only 13% of the participants ended up making reservations through social media. On the other hand, 59% made reservations after consulting the consumer review. This proves that consumer reviews have more impact to travelers than social media does.

Even price comparison sites are popular to modern travelers. 49% took advantage of sites like Expedia, Kayak and Priceline. 36% decided to book a hotel with these sites.

The senior VP of CMB’s Travel and Hospitality practice, Judy Melanson, states, “There’s no shortage of information available to travelers as they plan and book hotels for their vacations. We know their path involves multiple sites and sources of information. The challenge for hotels is to decide how to align their marketing budgets to best intercept potential travelers —delivering desired content on the appropriate device and through the right channels and partners.”

After U.S. made $16.36 billion through digital travel sales in 2013, the hotel industry is expecting to make $26.14 billion at the end of 2014. Going further, it is estimated that mobile travel sales will amount to $64.69 billion in 2018.

The number of travelers who want a simpler hotel reservation process continues to grow. It is clear that mobile devices, mobile apps and the hotel industry go hand in hand to succeed.
